Chumur at 16,700 Feet to Become India’s First Model Border Village Under Vibrant Village Programme
Chumur in Ladakh, located at 16,700 feet near the Line of Actual Control, is set to become India’s first Model Border Village under the Vibrant Village Programme. With 91 residents and 24 households, the initiative focuses on climate-resilient housing, tourism, livelihoods, and strategic border security development.
The village, home to only 91 residents and 24 households, has been identified for a transformative initiative aimed at strengthening habitation in strategically sensitive frontier regions. The project focuses on the creation of climate-resilient housing, the promotion of tourism opportunities, and the development of sustainable livelihood options for the local population.
Authorities view the initiative as part of a broader strategic shift in border management policy, wherein permanently inhabited and economically active border settlements are considered essential to long-term border security. The approach underscores the importance of ensuring that remote frontier villages are not only habitable but also economically viable.
By integrating development with strategic planning, the initiative seeks to reinforce demographic presence in high-altitude border regions while improving living standards for residents. Chumur, with its small but established community, has emerged as a focal point of this policy direction.
Explained by Ankur Pandey, the development raises a broader question of whether Chumur can serve as a blueprint for India’s future frontier strategy, combining infrastructure development, livelihood generation, and strategic settlement strengthening in sensitive border areas.
